They have certainly stepped it up [as if i even thought that was possible]. We are delighted to announce the impending Vol. 12 in the PR Cubed canon, and even more delighted to announce that it is none other than St. Augustine’s very own The Cougs, formerly prefaced in name and still currently fronted by the one and only Mr. V.

One may ask: Are they men about town or rock and roll secret-triple-agents? Why can’t they be both? One may wonder: is un-ironic long hair back in? Well I don’t see why the answer would really matter. For the music is not in the mustache nor vice versa. It emanates from a more ethereal realm, translated into something we can’t see but rather feel, yet carrying with it very concrete political and economic implications.

So where along the spectrum do The Cougs fall? I sense Pavement’s weirder rock gems with slightly more out-of-key vocals. I sense surf and garage-tinged reverb-esque riffs, vocals and guitar tones with straightforward garage rock percussion. One moment it might be the 70′s. The next we might just be in the early 90′s. Perhaps,though,The Cougs are simply the supra-modern synthesis of all these classic rock forms; literary,explosive,urgent, relevant and intelligible, even poppy. They are the perfect cassette to have in your arsenal for the present age of imposed isolation and alienation, a weapon to be used against the fascistic enemy regimes just when they believe us to be at our most vulnerable. Aim carefully.

This album is my favorite of theirs so far….there are  more rockin’ pop elements than previous releases, and at the same time it is certainly more brown.  We are more than stoked to have a hand in this record. The band members play like musical mercenaries, hired to commit war crimes and executing their direct orders with shameless efficiency. “Science fiction authors forewarn the dangers of gene-splicing and its freakish byproduct, but in an Alternative Tentacles tome, “freakish” is a desirable trait. Triclops! (“!” is part of the name) is one such result of SF Bay Area inter-band splicing (featuring members of Bottles and Skulls and the Lower Forty-Eight fortified by personnel from AT stalwarts Victims Family and Fleshies), assaulting the public with the best acid punk around today. Don’t let their pedigree fool you: Triclops! Turns the dial down on the bellicose punk/hardcore you might expect, instead opting for meandering yet tension-filled psychedelic epics. The band started in 2005 with John (Fleshies) and Christian (Bottles and Skulls) laying down tapes filled with echo-laden guitars and drums, vocals run through broken solid state amps with phaser explosion. The duo attacked noise pedals/tape loops/randomly modified guitars and began to realize the band required a rhythm section. In the beginning of 2006, they enlisted monster drummer Phil and Alternative Tentacles veteran Larry Boothroyd on bass. Positive reviews followed their 2006 “Cafeteria Brutalia” EP on Sick Room (engineered by Phil Manley of Trans Am/Fucking Champs) and a picture-disc 7-inch on GSL. By the end of 2007, Triclops! had shared the stage with The Melvins, Comets On Fire, The Locust, Acid Mother’s Temple, Qui, Dragons of Zynth, Don Caballero, Big Business and many other amazing and awful bands. The seven songs on Out of Africa, their first full-length, are reminiscent of the golden hits from the 1990s Touch and Go or Amphetamine Reptile catalogs, tweaked out on the exhilarating paranoia typical of America in the early aughts. Recorded by the Melvins’ engineer Kurt Schlegel; distorted vocals, oscillating bass lines, and jittery guitars form a nervous, seasick swath over the plodding drums. Songs unfurl into worlds of their own with byzantine lyrics -the lament of an Iraqi museum curator in one, an ode to the botfly (a tropical parasite) in another – while the music explores variations in tone and urgency. ALLIGATOR:
Prehistoric Reptilians: Cassette
Thrashing cymbal crashes offset with treble-kicking guitar parts to scatter the magnetic ions on this tape-recorded gem. This group is made up of various members of other bands and this effort feels and seems like a Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band of sorts. (The urban legend: The Beatles invented alter egos to forget being The Beatles and just make music made from a fresh state of mind without expectations.) But instead of dressing like cashiers at Long John Silvers, the members of Alligator don alligator attire at shows and this tape, previously released as an LP and CD, includes track names such as “Iguana Tooth,” “Anacondas,” and “Rattlesnakes,” to name a few. These songs mix yelling vocals with dance-y tight rhythms, which makes the music feel like a less experimental Q And Not U. In line with Dischord ten-dollar credos, “Pay no more than $5” is printed in the tape notes. But more line with their very own Prehistoric Reptilians credos this recording you can get on an old school cassette tape. Like the goofball that I am, I heard a few of Todd’s songs on his myspace page and have never heard them anywhere else to date. So I got really excited and offered to put this tape out….and “Whaa Happened???”…It Happened!  We in the executive branch here at P.R.Cubed are MEGA STOKED to say the very least.

Todd’s  songs hit like LSD on the beach!  Mellower and more plesant than the other bands mentioned above, yet still one gets the feeling he would choose dare over truth every single round. If that makes sense at all.  Each song seems to have a million instruments and as each finale approaches the layered depths are perfectly executed…..leaving the listener stokedly “afloat” in a sea of sound.  “Clown Frown” is psychedelic and trippy without once going over the edge. The magic of these songs is that you would not have to love F.Y.P. or T.T.K. or U.R.T.C.  to enjoy them.  They stand “erected” and alone as present classics.
